SafetyOn released its first annual Onshore Wind health and safety incident data report in June 2021.

Benchmarking the health and safety performance of the UK onshore wind industry for the first time, the report provides transparency on the industry’s performance, as well as a solid platform for the development of SafetyOn’s work programme and good practice guidance. The report has been produced through collaboration across SafetyOn members, gathering data facilitated by the Energy Institute by following a consistent process and sharing incident data to build a picture of performance, risk and trends across the sector.

The 2020 incident data shows that 6,971,142 worked hours were reported last year with a total of 532 incidents occurring. Of the reported incidents, which include near misses, 455 (86%) took place on an operational onshore wind farm, with 62 (12%) on a wind farm under construction, 13 (2%) on a site under development and 2 (0.4%) whilst working from home. There were no fatalities

The monitoring and gathering of data on the health and safety performance of the UK onshore wind sector is a key part of the SafetyOn work programme. It is anticipated that the publication of SafetyOn’s annual incident data can and will lead to improvements in health and safety performance across the UK onshore wind industry, as well as setting the future work programmes of the organisation and assisting industry stakeholders in determining where emerging risks can be mitigated through co-operation and shared learning.
