Potential service life impact on RSTI-68 and RSTI-69


TE Connectivity has become aware of a potential reduction in service life of our RSTI separable connectors of Type RSTI-68xx and RSTI-69xx occurring in converter-based applications (windfarms, solar power, etc.) at a voltage level of 30kV and above.
The products at issue are compliant with the relevant standard, i.e., CENELEC HD 629.1 S2. Nonetheless, partial discharges (PDs) have occasionally been observed in windfarm applications and solar power plants on products supplied between today and 2010.

Impact on service life


The specific partial discharges that have been observed can cause accelerated ageing of the product. Despite this accelerated aging, the average lifetime of the product will still remain well above 5 years from energization.
So far, not a single RSTI has failed in operation due to this specific issue. However, an electrical breakdown due to accelerated aging even within the first 5 years of operation cannot be completely ruled out.


Recommended action:


* TE recommends increasing safety precautions for all installations of RSTI-68xx and RSTI-69xx which are installed in open (not internal arc classified) cable compartments. These installations should not be approached while energized.


* Furthermore, TE recommends checking installed RSTI-68xx and RSTI-69xx for signs of specific partial discharge. Affected RSTIs should be timely replaced with a revised product version which will be provided by your RSTI vendor or TE directly. (Work instructions for inspection and replacement procedures provided on request).


* RSTI-68xx and RSTI-69xx that are not yet installed should be returned to the respective vendor for replacement with the revised product version.


* RSTIs in operation on 6-24kV applications, RSTIs installed in environments without nearby converter-based installations, RSTI-CCs (RSTI coupling connectors) and all RSTIs molded after 31.07.2018 (see mold clock on T-boot) are not impacted by subject matter.
